Pure joie de vivre on two wheels for the family.
It’s no secret that the Salzburg mountains are known for their wonderful cycling and hiking trails. Cycling and especially e-biking has become a real boom here in Salzburger Land in recent years.
E-biking in the mountains with children can be a great way to spend time in nature and experience family adventures together. You can reach high peaks and mountain pastures in no time at all with varying degrees of effort.
Here we offer you some tips to help make this activity safe and enjoyable. Discover our favourite bike tours in this blog, directly from the Hofgut Resort.
First e-bike tour with children in the mountains.
Very important! Before heading into the mountains, it’s best to do a few warm-up laps on the play road behind the main building of the Hofgut. Try out the gears and test the e-stages. Riding uphill on an e-bike is usually no problem, it’s the descents that are tricky. Correct braking needs to be learnt, especially on unpaved roads. It is also important to mention that the batteries of children’s e-bikes do not have the same charging capacity as those of adult bikes. The turbo gear should therefore be used as sparingly as possible.
A follow-me is recommended for smaller children, even if they can already ride a bike. Mounted on the seat of the parents’ e-bike, the kids can pedal along themselves, but are secured to mum and dad at the back. Diligent pedalling even provides noticeable speed assistance. There are bike trailers for the smallest cyclists, where the kids can chill out comfortably strapped in and equipped with fly screens while the active parents complete their sports programme. The bike trailers are also perfect for midday naps.
In addition to the e-bike for adults and children, you can hire all bike equipment such as follow-me, child bike seat or bike trailer including helmet and bike lock from us at the Hofgut.
Don’t forget catering and breaks.
Even though the routes are well signposted and we have a moderate and often cooler climate in Salzburg’s Pongau region, a tour in the mountains can be quite strenuous. Therefore, always pack enough water bottles and small snacks for smaller children.
The best thing about the tours in the mountains are the small fountains that can be found along the routes from time to time. Refresh your face and hands with the cool water and then enjoy the ice-cold mountain spring water. For refreshment, we recommend stopping off at the cosy alpine pastures of the Wagrain-Kleinarl Valley.
