Outings that grow with your children

“What shall we do today?” – a question every parent knows. In autumn, there are plenty of answers around the Hofgut: playgrounds among the trees, animals to pet and trails that can be explored with a stroller, child carrier or on little feet.

We have sorted our favourite autumn outings by how much time and effort they require. This makes it easy to find the right activity for your day – from a walk after breakfast to a full-day adventure.

Just around the corner – short distances for little feet

Klabautermänner playground, Wagrain. Around the “NEMO” pirate ship, children can climb, balance and play with sand and water. Getting there is part of the fun: the playground is around a 25-minute walk away and can also be reached with a stroller.

Wagrainer Alm. A leisurely hike of around 50 minutes leads to this more than 330-year-old alpine hut, and the trail is suitable for strollers. At the top, a playground awaits the children – and the chance to stop for refreshments rewards the parents too.

Edelweißalm. Ponies, sheep and goats live in the petting zoo on the sunny plateau above Wagrain. Right next to it, a playground offers plenty of space to let off steam, while a short walk around Lake Daarmoossee rounds off the morning.

Fur, wool and manes – meeting the animals

Oberegghof, Wagrain. Icelandic horses and Shetland ponies live here, and children can get to know and groom them. By appointment, they can also enjoy a short ride in the saddle – an experience that is sure to be remembered.

Alpacas at Unterrainhof, Kleinarl. On an alpaca walk, the animals set the pace. Add a picnic basket with regional organic delicacies and it becomes an outing for all the senses.

Water, forest and waterfalls – nature to marvel at

Jägersee, Kleinarl. Emerald-green water, forests and mountains: for us, a walk around the lake belongs to every autumn holiday. Rowing boats can be hired by the shore, and afterwards Gasthaus Jägersee is a lovely place to stop for traditional dishes, game specialities and vegetarian bowls. Our tip for cooler days: take a thermos of tea along for the boat ride.

Kesselfall, Kleinarl. This short circular trail leads through the forest, past rocks and across a bridge to the waterfall. Little explorers can walk by themselves, while the youngest travel comfortably in a child carrier, which you can borrow from our reception.

Liechtensteinklamm, St. Johann. Walkways, tunnels, towering rock faces and the Helix spiral staircase turn the route through the gorge into an adventure. This is an outing for a baby carrier or backpack carrier – strollers stay at the car park. Sturdy footwear is recommended for the approximately 440 steps, and the views make every single one worthwhile.

When there is time for a full day out

Geisterberg, St. Johann. The Alpendorf gondola takes you up to more than 40 play stations spread across four themed worlds: earth, fire, water and air spirits. The gondola and paths are stroller-friendly, the Geisterberg train takes you part of the way uphill, and there is a special Wichtelweg trail for the youngest visitors.

Hubangerl forest playground, St. Johann. Swings, slides and sand play await in the middle of the forest. The mini climbing park is fitted with high safety nets, allowing even little children to make their way from tree to tree.

Wildlife and Adventure Park Untertauern. Red deer, fallow deer and mouflon can be observed from close range. The petting zoo is home to pygmy goats, rabbits, ducks and llamas, and pony rides are available for an additional charge without advance booking.

Where to go first?

By the lake, among the treetops, in the gorge or surrounded by animals in the petting zoo – autumn around the Hofgut offers plenty of variety. And if the weather turns grey, Wasserwelt Wagrain-Kleinarl is a great place for a swim and some water fun.
